The whitewashed homes and storefronts of Inverary at the head of Loch Fyne welcome the visitor to Mid-Argyll, with a history longer than the Scottish Nation. Nineteenth century Inverary Jail transports you back to an 1820's courtroom while the turreted towers of Inverary Castle, home to the Dukes of Argyll, reflect the splendour of the once all powerful Clan Campbell. A little outside the town discover the 55 acres of Argyll Wildlife Park. Southward lies Lochgilpead, gateway to the prehistoric stone markers of Kilmartin Glen, testament to a time before the 6th century arrival of Irish settlers of the ' Scots ' tribe, who would go forward to found ' Scot '-Land from their fortress at Dunaad. Learn of the area's fascinating past at Kilmartin House, Museum of Ancient Culture. Further south and west are the unspoilt lands of Knapdale.
